Charley’s magnificent tropical rainforest

Charley’s Chocolate Mt Edna property in tropical FNQ is inland from Mission Beach village and is part of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council area.

Tour visitors to Charley’s Chocolate will see our chocolate making facility, tree nursery, the Mt Edna cocoa plantation and our lovely sheds! What they might miss is our lowland tropical rainforest, which comprises 80 of the 120 hectares that make up the Mt Edna property.

Charley’s Chocolate  aims to be environmentally friendly - which includes looking after our tropical lowland rainforest – a jewel in our ecological crown.

BUT FNQ tropical rainforest is under threat.

FNQ Tropical Rainforests have gradually reduced over the years, due to land clearing. But our lowland tropical rainforest will continue to be well looked after.

The fruits of the rainforest - Charley’s Chocolate Davidson Plum chocolate

Davidson's Plum, native to FNQ

Davidson’s Plum grows naturally in the rainforests of the Wet Tropics in northern Australia. It is a real bush food and is also known as the Australian Rainforest Plum.

Charley’s Chocolate combine this with the award winning Australian grown King Ranch 70% dark chocolate made from beans grown in the Tully River Valley of Tropical North Queensland. This chocolate bursts with fruit and complements the delicious tartness of the plum.

Charley's Chocolate Milk Chocolate and Lemon Myrtle

Lemon Myrtle is another Australian Bush food known as the ‘queen’ of lemon herbs and is considered by many to be a beneficial powerhouse super food. It is extremely aromatic, lemony, tangy and zesty.

We source our Lemon Myrtle from Mareeba near the Atherton Tablelands, the region famous for it's rainforest waterfalls. Combined with our own Mount Edna Grown 60% Premium Single Origin Milk Chocolate it makes a truly Far North Queensland taste sensation.

Next time you visit Charley’s Chocolate, take the time to check out our beautiful rainforest.

Minister declares our rainforest

The federal Ministry for the Environment announced on 20 December 2021 that she had listed a range of lowland tropical rainforest of the Wet Tropics as an endangered ecological community under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

FNQ tropical rainforests lie between just north of Townsville to Cooktown and beyond and mostly grow below 80 to 100m above sea level. There are some areas at higher elevations on the gently rising plateau at Mena Creek and East Palmerston near Innisfail.

FNQ tropical rainforests include a wide range of plants and animals – from tall evergreen trees with large leaves and buttresses, like palms and figs, to cassowaries, tree kangaroos and tree frogs.
